MARY ANN VERONICA FAY
Mary was born in the small town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania to John and Annabel Fay. Her only surviving sibling, Eleanor Agnes Chavez, lives in Corpus Christi, Texas. She grew up on a farm with her brother John and Sisters, Pat and Eleanor. She married Mohammed El Azhary in 1982. Mo was working in Vienna, Austria and they successfully navigated a long distance relationship until Mo was able to relocate to the DC Area where they lived happily for over 30 years. Although, Mary and Mo did not have children, they were blessed with many nieces and nephews who they loved and cherished! Always ready to celebrate their success and help out when there was a need. We all knew that we could count on Aunt Mary and Uncle Mo to be there when we needed them.
Mary was the first girl in her family to attend College on a four year scholarship at the University of Notre Dame where she studied music, specializing in Organ and Piano. She graduated with Honors and was on the Dean’s List throughout her college studies. She was very proficient in English and excelled playing the organ.
Mary had a very interesting career! After Graduation she moved to the Washington, DC area and took a position teaching English at an Elementary school in Northern Virginia. With her Summers free, she applied for an Internship in the Kennedy Administration. She was hired by then Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson who told her “You Will Do Okay Dear”. Following her Internship, she worked for the Department of the Army in the Pentagon. In 1973, she worked for the U.S. Senate as one of the editors of the Watergate Hearings. Soon after, she joined the office of Senator Barry Goldwater from Arizona and became his clerk on the Space and Science Committee. She worked in the Senate for several years. Mary also worked briefly at the Egyptian Embassy and was involved in the signing of the historic Camp David Accord between Anwar Sadat, Menachim Begin, and President Jimmy Carter. She also worked at the National Shrine in the Bursars Office and Catholic University in the Dean’s office.
On Sundays for many years, Mary shared her musical gifts, playing the organ at the Soldier’s Home in Washington DC for Celebrations and the Funerals of Veterans. She was not one to sit still! She volunteered for several years at the “Gift of Peace” House helping in the office and teaching the Missionaries of Charity, (Mother Teresa’s Sisters) English in the evening. She had the opportunity to meet Mother Teresa on her visits to the Washington DC House and they became friends!
Later, Mary took a position as Assistant to the President with (NEMA) the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, a lobbying organization, where she worked for many years. Mary completed her working years at the Military Archdiocese of Washington, DC as a part-time employee, working 20 hours a week, editing the Newsletter of the Organization.
Mary was a beautiful and talented lady! She will be missed by all who knew and loved her!
